Instrumentation: b-flat clarinet, violin, percussion
Year: 2019 | Duration: 9-10'
Nothing Motorised was premiered by F-Plus ensemble in 2019. It was recorded by members of the Slee Sinfonietta as part of June in Buffalo (2020). In 2021, an arrangement of the piece for violin, viola, and clarinet was performed by Homegrown New Music Ensemble. In 2022 it was performed at Carnegie Hall by the Constantinidies New Music Ensemble. In 2023, it was a winner of the Bent Frequency Underscore Call for Scores.
Program Note: Nothing Motorised is named after a joke that my mother once made about me and my sister not being able to drive a car. The piece in itself turns the instruments into one vehicle, exploiting and blending their different resonances. The material that the piece develops is sparse but leads to many different timbral combinations and incidental rhythms through beating. The pace of the piece is slow and exploratory, like a bicycle or carriage ride. Perhaps there are a few moments where the carriage rocks or the bicycle speeds down a hill, but generally the journey is slow, more for enjoyment than destination. Whatever mental or physical vehicle the listener decided to travel in, it is definitely nothing motorised.
