Cell Phone Pieces
I’ve written and programmed various pieces for audiences and cellphones in which audience members are the sole performers. For these pieces, I create web apps that seamlessly and efficiently be connected to without breaking the aesthetic spell of the concert hall. These are intended only for collaborative, in-person performance. This demo video shows some footage from performances, though it's hard to capture the feeling of the experience on video. These pieces continue to be widely performed.
I’m particularly proud of whisper, in which audience members record themselves whispering lines of the Thomas Hardy poem In a Whispering Gallery into their cellphones and send them to a server. From there, they are played back ambisonically through speakers. whisper was inspired by a childhood visit to the whispering gallery in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.
