D, Me, You, We is a 40-minute “non-opera” for actor, generative ai chatbot, three musicians (on any instrument), and audience. On a rainy evening, a disembodied visitor arrives at the home of an unnamed character. The two converse through improvised dialogue. The “operatic” nature of the piece comes from the musical framing of this relationship. The musicians and audience work to create a soundworld that expresses both the physical location and the inner thoughts of the characters, often exploring exaggerated minutiae of everyday life. Audience members interact with cellphones and objects, guided through fleeting and whimsical moments by the musicians. Towards the end, audience members submit their own dialogue for the actor, shaping the conversation and revealing the real time improvisation of the chatbot.
